STUNNED medical staff have visited the chapel at Royal Preston Hospital to sign a book of condolences for Princes William and Harry.

The heartfelt messages will be sent to Diana's young sons on Friday in time for Saturday's funeral.

Reverend John Bolton set up the shrine to the Princess who officially opened the Royal Preston Hospital on June 1 1983. She also visited in January 1993 when the hospital unveiled its new scanner. Rev Bolton said: "Our great affection for the Princess goes very deep.

"Staff need a way of expressing their personal thoughts and support for William and Harry at this difficult time."

The Reverend, who met Diana several times, said: "She had an enormous ability to make people feel valued and important."

Flowers have been placed on the table where the Princess sat for the official opening ceremony. A candle has been lit, and a display of photos from her visits has also been set up in the prayer room.

Catering assistant Pat Ross choked back the tears as she signed the book, remembering the 'beautiful lady' from the opening 14 years ago.

Linda Parkinson was a radiographer when she met Diana in 1993. She said: "I feel honoured that I had the chance to meet such a special person."
