CHAMPION fund-raiser Michelle Lewis, who has raised more than £300,000 for various charities, was devastated when she learned of the death of Princess Diana, while on holiday in Palma, Spain.
The 15-year-old Cowley High School pupil, who suffers from a dengenerative condition that has prevented her leg muscles from forming properly, telephoned her grandmother Sylvia in Rainhill straight away.
Sylvia said: "Michelle met Princess Diana at an awards ceremony and she came across to her as a very caring and loving person. Michelle had also written several letters to the princess and received replies. from her lady-in-waiting. She is devastated by the news and can't believe what's happened - it's been a real shock."
LEADER of St Helens Council, Mike Doyle paid tribute on behalf of the borough's councillors and officers to the "shining kindness" of Princess Diana.
"The terrible tragedy of her death has left us stunned and very sad. Her kindness, care and concern for many of those in despair and need will long be remembered by those who were comforted by her.
"Not only this country, but the world, will be a much poorer place with her passing. The light has been extinguished but her work on behalf of so many individuals and causes will be her lasting tribute. We extend our deepest sympathy to her family."
St Helens North MP Dave Watts expressed his deepest sympathy for the families of Princess Diana, Dodi Al Fayed and for the chauffeur of the car.
He said: "I am sure I am speaking on behalf of all the people of St Helens North when I say I was shocked by the news. I believe that serious lessons need to be learned following the tragic accident, which appears to have been caused by excessive intrusion by elements of the press into the Princess' life.
"Obviously, our thoughts go the families, especially her two young sons."
