REPORT by Bert Taylor Holker Old Boys 0 Prescot Cables 3 PRESCOT striker Peter Cumiskey obviously gleaned personal satisfaction from Saturday's win at Barrow.
Last season's player of the year in the North West Counties Football League was bang on form after failing to score in the first four games of the new campaign.
And that made all the difference to Cables' all-round performance to which every member of the team contributed an important part.
Playing in a brand new blue kit, the visitors were smart in more ways than one. In the early minutes Cumiskey showed signs of a revival as he crossed a great centre which was nicely caught and cleared by goalkeeper Darren Hoyland.
Then we witnessed some clever play from Andy McMullen, playing his last game before six weeks' suspension, plus on-target shots from Tony Sullivan and Darren Hilditch.
With a beautiful afternoon matching the picturesque Furness countryside, everything seemed to be shaping up to enjoyment with the hosts proving good opposition following their midweek 2-0 win at Darwen.
Sullivan shared with Cumiskey the second half plaudits as he had had the ball snatched from his feet by the alert Hoyland, who later made a reflex save from the same man.
Then the deadlock was broken with Cumiskey hitting his first goal of the season from an early second half penalty awarded after he had been fouled as he was running for goal.
Minutes later Cumiskey doubled the lead with another unstoppable shot which, considering he was being policed by three or four opponents throughout the game, was a praiseworthy achievement.
But there was a sign of his still being hampered by a long nagging leg injury when he was substituted by Aaron Cramsie with minutes to go. Cramsie's first touch of the ball was memorable for it produced Prescot's third goal on the 89th minute.
And credit must also be given to the Prescot defence which has played four matches without a goal against them.
Prescot team: Greg Price, Paul Joyce, Kevin Loupe, Kevin Lynch, John Cassidy, Simon Hughes, Steve Wilson, Andy McMullen, Peter Cumiskey, Tony Sullivan, Darren Hilditch. Substitutes, Joe Doyle, Aaron Cramsie, Phil Noon (goalkeeper).
Last week's winning numbers in Cables' lottery were 1,6,8,10,11,12. Four winners shared £3050. A new draw for £700 takes place on Sunday next in the Deanes House Hotel.
