COMMUNITY volunteers are being drafted in to man Carnforth's police station on a permanent basis. A six month pilot scheme using volunteers to provide inquiry desk cover is being hailed as a success and is set to become a regular feature of the Grosvenor Road station. Now, an appeal has been launched to attract more volunteers to the job which has already encouraged one public-spirited volunteer to sign up for the Special Constabulary.
Insp Graham Dowling said: "We are extremely grateful for the work done by the volunteers. Their skills and enthusiasm have enabled us to provide a better service and we are pleased to have them as part of our team."
Community volunteers answer the telephone, pass on messages to the local control room, deal with complaints, lost and found property as well as production of driving documents.
Up until now volunteers, who include retired people as well as others in full and part-time jobs, worked during the evening and from 10am until 12pm on Saturdays. This cover will grow to man the desk on weekdays between 10am and 4pm.
"A retired fire officer, bank official, business consultant and nurse are members of he team together with a dental nurse, clerical administrator and personal manager. I would like to hear from anyone over the age of 18 who wishes to help others learn new skills and make a contribution to the Carnforth Community," added Insp Dowling.
Application forms can be collected from Carnforth station, alternatively ring 596608.
