COULD we extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to everyone who participated in both the organisation and planning of Superwalk '97 - and those who did the walk on the day with backing of so many sponsors.
We will be writing personally to thank individuals, but our special thanks must go to the Motorway Contractors - Alfred McAlpine, AMEC joint venture, and their colleagues for permission, co-operation, back-up and support to hold this event on the M65 Motorway extension.
We also wish to thank the army of volunteers who helped us on the day - Rotary and Round Table Clubs from Clitheroe and Burnley. Lions Clubs from Blackburn, Accrington and Darwen, St John's Ambulance, the Police, Lancashire Ambulance Service and many other individuals who came to help.
And we also thank the marvellous artists and musicians who gave freely of their time to entertain the walkers and thanks to the caters who made such tasty snacks and hot drinks. Behind the scenes a big thank you is due to our wonderful team of "Hot Line Helpers" who for three months manned the phones, processed the entries and sold the T-shirts. And a huge thank you is due to all the walkers - thousands of men, women and children from across the whole of East Lancashire who walked on the day, kept up an incredible sense of humour despite the tragic news from Paris and the inclement weather. The thousands of walkers had unbelievable support from tens of thousands of sponsors. This joint effort of walkers and sponsors have made it possible to raise over £150,000 for the East Lancs SuperScan Appeal. That must be a record for any charity ever on one day in East Lancashire.
Superwalk will be a day we will all remember. It has been a fantastic success. And it means that we are a big step nearer to having our own MRI Scanner operational in East Lancashire for the benefit of everybody in East Lancashire by the Spring of 1998.
Thank you to all East Lancashire people who are so generously supporting the East Lancs SuperScan Appeal. With your continued help we shall reach our target by Christmas.
IAN WOOLLEY, Chairman, Superwalk '97 Committee; MIKE TRICKETT, Vice Chairman, Superwalk '97 Committee.
