MORECAMBE'S Midland Hotel is on the verge of new ownership if planning permission for a casino is granted.

Manchester-based company, London and European, says it wants to buy the Art-deco masterpiece and give the hotel a £1.25 million facelift.

The hotel has recently been in the news after becoming embroiled in a row with the council over unpaid business rates. It has also been at the centre of many rumours about potential new owners for a number of years.

Plans for the casino, which will encompass some minor alterations and the restoration of the famous Eric Gill mural, will go before the planning committee next Monday.

The hotel is a grade-two listed building which was built in the 30s for the London, Midland and Scottish railway to the designs of Oilver Hill. The application will have to be refered to the Department of Environment for clearance.
