SECOND Division rivals Northampton Town could be ready to swoop for Nigel Gleghorn, writes TONY DEWHURST.
I can reveal tonight that Northampton have made a firm enquiry about Gleghorn and could follow up their interest with a transfer bid for the 35-year-old midfielder.
Gleghorn played for an hour and scored for Northampton Reserves in yesterday's 3-0 win over Leyton Orient at the Sixfields Stadium.
Player-manager Chris Waddle confirmed: "Northampton are very interested in Nigel and they've asked about his availability.
"They've not made a concrete offer but they've said they will have a close look and if they are satisfied with his fitness then they might take him."
Gleghorn was one of six players transfer-listed by Waddle as the player-manager bids to generate cash to play the transfer market.
But Waddle says he has had no fixed offers for the other five - Marco Gentile, Gerry Harrison, Ian Helliwell, Vince Overson or Jamie Hoyland. "We've had one club ask about Gerry but that was nothing strong," added Waddle.
"I haven't circulated these names because they are bad players.
"I have listed them to try and bring some cash into the club and cut the wage bill.
"I've got to start things moving and get bodies out to bring the people I want in.
"If there are a few injuries then they could force their way back into contention.
"Just because I've circulated their names it doesn't mean they don't have any sort of a future here. Who is to say what might happen?
"I've certainly nothing against them as individuals. They've played hard and worked hard, like the rest of the squad.
"I've just weighed my squad up and looked at the options available to me."
Waddle and a host of scouts watched Gentile, Harrison and Helliwell feature in last night's 3-1 Pontin's League fixture at York City. Helliwell was on the mark in a convincing 3-1 win at Bootham Crescent.
Waddle added: "There were several scouts at York last night and maybe there could be a follow-up from that."
"The only major interest is in Nigel Gleghorn and he could be on the move to Northampton."
