DEVASTATED mum Mary Murgatroyd has spoken of her love for her beloved daughter Janet who would have been celebrating her birthday this week.

Bright young law student Janet - who would have been 22 on Monday (September 8) enjoyed a night out with friends on June 15 last year before setting off to walk back to her Penwortham home.

Her battered body was discovered floating in the River Ribble the next day and police are still hunting her killer. Mrs Murgatroyd, of Broadoak Gree, Penwortham, Preston, said: "Janet was absolutely in my thoughts - she is every day. On Monday I went to church and put a big bouquet of flowers on her grave."

And Mrs Murgatroyd added that although the police had not made any arrests she was satisfied with what was being done.

She said: "I'm happy with everything they're doing. They keep me updated on a daily basis. But I still want the killer found."

Janet's killer is still at large despite a huge police investigation which has involved door-to-door inquiries, a poster campaign, and an appearance on BBC's Crimewatch.

Police still believe someone must know who the killer is and have urged them to come forward.

Detective Inspector Graham Bamber said: "There are no leads at present but officers are still carrying out enquiries.

"I still have the view that someone knows the killer and I urge them to come forward."
