I HAVE just read the appalling comments of one Dr David Starkey, a constitutional historian, on Teletext.

He states that Earl Spencer's very moving and very truthful speech at the funeral of his much loved sister Diana, Princess of Wales, "seemed to be an act of calculated vengeance" and that it made the Princes victims of "a public tug of war".

I, everybody I have spoken to, and most of the people interviewed on television have said that the speech was what was in the heart of millions of people on this tragic day. Proof of this being the standing applause from Hyde Park and London's streets (filled with thousands of people), which spilled in to the Abbey and swept through the mourners as stated by many "like a wave".

Earl Spencer spoke the truth and that is what the people of the country, "her country" wanted to hear.

Another comment made: "instead of knitting wounds up it seemed to open them."

This comment to me, is proof that the truth may hurt, but in this case only the guilty will hurt.

Dr Starkey had also stated that Earl Spencer's speech had:

"Done exactly the opposite of what one would have expected from a funeral tribute."

I ask myself, where has Dr Starkey been all week, for the rest of the nation were expecting a "unique funeral for a unique person", and was certainly a wonderful and fitting tribute to the Princess.

Dr David Starkey, your comments and opinions are not welcome by the nation, please keep them to yourself, and let the Princess of Wales "the Queen of people's hearts" rest in peace and her family and the nation mourn.
