BURNLEY have told Chris Waddle: "You have to sell before you can spend."

Waddle admitted he has asked the board of directors for extra cash after Burnley's faltering start to the Second Division campaign.

But the board have ordered Waddle to prune his wage bill before any extra faces can be added to the Clarets squad.

And today director Clive Holt admitted: "The basic situation is that the manager has had quite a considerable amount of money to spend already.

"It is only right and proper that Chris has to move players on before we can make extra finance available.

"That is only sensible and we have to have a balance financially at the football club.

"The transfer cupboard is not bare, but Chris will have to do some wheeling and dealing in the transfer market first.

"Obviously we are all worried and concerned about the start to the season, but we have to believe that results are going to improve.

"Chris has signed some very good players and it is going to take time for the team to click." The board's stance appears a financially prudent one in the circumstances, with such a massive financial commitment to the new management team and a huge players' wage bill.

However, one option open to the player-manager could be the sale of first choice Marlon Beresford, who still appears to be generating interest following Leicester City's enquiry last month.

But that would have to be a last resort as Waddle admitted: "Marlon Beresford is worth ten League points to me so selling him is not something I would want to do.

"Obviously I've to look at everything, but in an ideal world I don't want to sell my best players.

"The object is to get out of Division Two and into the next division. Selling your best players will not help me achieve that."

Waddle added: "The reality is that we need to bring a mimimum of two or three players in.

"I've asked for money but I was told that players have to go before new people can come in.

"That side is a problem at present because I need to increase my options as soon as possible. "Although I've brought five or six new players in it is clearly not enough. We need a bigger squad and increased options.

"All the other clubs who are competing for this division like Preston, Wigan and Fulham have done it. I think we've got to do the same.

"I really do not think there is enough pressure on players' places at the club.

"That is the reason I've asked for more money and why I want to bring new players in."

Vince Overson featured for Shrewsbury Town Reserves in a 5-0 friendly victory over Stoke City's second team at Gay Meadow yesterday.

Overson is expected to make his Shrewsbury debut against Notts County at the weekend after Burnley agreed a month's loan with the Third Division side.

"Vince was extremely impressive and I was delighted with his contribution," said manager Jake King.
