I WAS somewhat saddened by the views of P Newton (Letters, September 12) regarding the fence versus hedgerow at Witton Park High School, Blackburn.
Surely, the beauty and amenity value of any body of woodland includes the wildlife contained therein and a hedgerow is at least as valuable for wildlife as woodland is.
It also requires virtually no maintenance for the first few years. Every year, hundreds of miles of hedgerow are destroyed by farmers, so I for one, am very glad to see one being planned.
