RAMBO-STYLE semi-automatic machine guns of the type used by Hungerford mass murderer Michael Ryan were to be banned.
Tighter controls were also to be introduced on pump action and self-loading shotguns and there was to be a firearms amnesty, Home Secretary Douglas Hurd said.
Mr Hurd also promised tougher penalties for people possessing shotguns without certificates.
