I WOULD like to comment on the media pressure being placed on the Royal Family to modernise and be more open after the irrational hysteria witnessed at the tragic Princess Diana's funeral.
When Charles and Diana came on television giving their own sides of the breakdown of their marriage, this was presumably 'modern and open.' This action accelerated the decline in popularity of the monarchy within the nation.
The Royal Family was ill-advised to go public. I believe that most people don't want to see the Royal Family 'warts and all.' Any problems should have been settled privately.
The privacy that families expect should extend to the monarchy and their actions should not be dictated by press barons of various nationalities and dubious motives.
The Royal Family must not bow to pressure from any quarter. After this difficult time, when mistakes have been made, mainly through poor advice, a more private and regal image should be promoted, not a false 'common man' pose adopted.
