LETTERS and petitions to Peter Pike calling for tightening of firework safety regulations have helped bring about changes, says the Burnley MP.
He said new regulations should be in place this year, following public consultation.
And he warned the Government will implement even tougher regulations if there is not a major improvement in safety records.
"I have received lots of letters on this subject over the last few years and a large petition and I have continually pressed for improvement in safety regulations.
"These letters and petitions have helped bring about the proposed regulations, as well as the Lancashire County Council Trading Standards Officer's response to consultation."
Mr Pike added: "While the final proposals may not go as far as everyone would wish, they are a major move in the right direction.
"In a recent letter to me the minister, Nigel Griffiths, made it clear tat he is prepared to go further if there is not a major improvement in the situation."
