WESTLEIGH CC are celebrating an unprecedented double.

The first team clinched the North West Counties Cricket League crown on Saturday - just one week after the second team tied up the Second Division title.

For the seniors it was a marvellous step-up from 1996 when they were runners-up for the First Division championship.

But there was no holding them this time - despite a rain-soaked afternoon for their match against Bolton Indians.

The game was eventually abandoned. But the points were already in the bag.

The Indians were surrounded and finally bowled out for 96, the wickets shared by Darren Barclay and Leon Sykes, who each snapped up four, and a double from Paul Kay. Fine fielding completed the job.

Rain cut short the Westleigh reply and the game ended in a draw.

The 2nd X1 were chasing Bolton's score of 104 with the wickets shared between Ian Sephton, Andrew Roylance and Carl Farrimond.

They had scored 84-2 with Farrimond - who sustained a knee injury - on 48 when the rains came.

This week, as the club looks back on a champagne season, delighted secretary Paul Entwistle said: "The two championship titles are a reward for consistent performances throughout the season. Both teams were unbeaten in league matches."
