FOOTBALL fans want to drum up a little more atmosphere at Deepdale - with their own mini band on the terraces.

Singing supporters, who already create a roar with drums they take on the Town End, are on the look-out for other musicians to join them.

Their story goes back to the days when John Beck was in charge of the North End team. He wanted a trumpet player in the crowd to get behind his side.

A supporter obliged and made the odd appearance. But no loyal fan has become a permanent fixture - except for the popular drummers.

Chief Drummer Ian McIver, 41, from Preston, said: "We have the drummers but we really could do with a trumpet or other instruments. There must be someone out there who wants to do that bit extra. We're not going to pack in if we don't get other members but we need just a bit of help."

Avid North End fan Stephen Addison, from Macclesfield, said: "Having a band is great at bringing passion to bear on the team.

But the plans may fall on deaf ears because first the fans need the club's permission.

Deepdale's Ground Safety Officer Nigel Webster said: "They need to write in to me. I'm quite favourable to atmosphere being generated in the ground and the drummers are alright. I'm not standing in their way but I've to make sure everything is subject to ground safety regulations."
