A MAN impaled his face on broken glass when he fell through a door.
Dennis Shuttleworth suffered serious cuts to his face when he tumbled down the stairs from his first floor flat, and crashed head first through a tough glass panel in the door below.
The horrific accident took place in Mr Shuttleworth's home on Egan Street in Preston's town centre at around 9.45pm on Tuesday (September 23).
A neighbour called the emergency services and a Med Alert doctor treated Mr Shuttleworth at the scene. Fire crews from the Blackpool Road station were called to remove the door panel so the injured man could be taken to hospital still pierced by the wired glass.
Assistant divisional fire officer Mike Painter explained: "In most cases you're not supposed to remove the object impaling the body until you're at hospital. However the doctor managed to free the man and we didn't have to cut through the door."
Mr Shuttleworth was taken to Royal Preston Hospital where he is said to be comfortable. A spokesman said: "It is too early to say if the patient will be moved to the plastic surgery ward for treatment."
