IF there is a habit more disgusting than spitting out chewing gum, then I've yet to see it. My daughter was walking through the town centre and, unknown to her, she trod in some chewing gum, which was still fresh, and stuck to her shoe.
My daughter was then equally unlucky to tread in some dog muck, which ground itself into the grooves of her sole. When she arrived home and tried to clean her work shoes she found it almost impossible to dislodge any of the muck, because it was stuck to the chewing gum.
She spent an hour cleaning one shoe. It may make some people laugh, but my daughter wasn't laughing. It could be you next time.
