THE historic Preston Chimes could ring out again - only this time it would be for Diana, Princess of Wales.

The Chimes, written specially for the town's Parish Church bells, first rang out in 1814 to celebrate the battle of Waterloo.

But they haven't been heard since the fifties when the carillon - the huge music box which sets the bells - went wrong.

And now, following plans by the town's rector, Canon Robert Ladds, the music box could be restored and renamed the Diana Chimes of Preston.

It's just one of several suggestions for a permanent tribute to the much loved princess being discussed by civic, business and church leaders.

Rev Robert Ladds said: "Some tired old plaque on a wall would not adequately remember the Princess as she expressed her life."

And Lee Le Clercq from the council agreed: "We do feel that a static memorial would probably not be appropriate. A memorial that is dynamic would be better."

The Preston Chimes fell into disuse because not all the 10 bells needed to perform the music have been in working order.

Canon Ladds said: "This is the first time we have all 10 bells working. But we need to raise £5,000 to repair the carillon."

The bells will be back at the Parish Church in November when they will be blessed and named.

It has even been suggested that one could be named Diana and another Theresa, although they are usually given saint's names.

A spokesperson for the council said: "The idea of the bells would be a good idea but it's just one of many under consideration."
