Rolls-Royce Aerospace is giving would-be young cricketers a leading edge with a £5,000 gift.

The cash is towards the cost of setting up a cricket academy at Edge End High School, Nelson, where sports minister Tony Banks will drop in to survey the field of play in November.

Rolls chairman Sir Ralph Robins was impressed with plans for an academy at Edge End High School, Nelson, when he was told about it by Pendle MP Gordon Prentice.

The school is applying to the National Lottery to help pay for the £2 million sports hall equipped with hi-tech nets and staffed by county-standard coaches.

The gift was confirmed after head Martin Burgess presented his ideas to staff at the company.

The general manager of Rolls-Royce, Barnoldswick, Peter Orcherton said the firm received an enormous number of requests every year for assistance from organisations and individuals and could not help everyone.

He added: "However, we have given careful consideration to the project and we have recently written to the head teacher offering £5,000 towards his plans for an East Lancashire cricket coaching centre."
