THE former head of a Bury home for the mentally ill walked free from court yesterday (September 25) after being convicted of the manslaughter of her severely-handicapped daughter.

Julie Watts (31) who killed her daughter Abby by deliberately removing a vital breathing tube, was given an 18-months jail sentence, suspended for two years, by a judge at Manchester Crown Court.

She was also put under a supervision order - under the control of the probation service - for two years. Watts had been the manager of the former, privately-owned Birks House in Brandlesholme, Bury. She left in March 1995, five months before Abby died.

The home later came under new management.
