West Park 49 Vagabonds (I.O.M.) 15 VISITORS Vagabonds fielded a much-changed side to that which performed well against Park in last season's league games both home and away.
And it was soon clear that Park's recruiting campaign in the close season has now put them in a class above their visitors. Apart from an even first 20 minutes when half-backs Pearce and Strett put centre Donovan through to give full-back Chris Glynn the opening try, Vagabonds replying with a Chris Till penalty, and a spell in the second half when Park lost concentration, it was one-way traffic to the Manxmen's try line.
Chris Glynn showed blistering pace to register a first-half hat-trick and Donovan put Glen Fletcher over for the same player to add the conversion.
The try tally was doubled after half-time. Glynn sustained a leg injury and was replaced by Phil Lawrenson before a Fletcher penalty and tries by Donovan two, Carl Bibby and No.8 Steve Bibby, having his best game since joining Park, with Fletcher adding two conversions completed a comprehensive first league win.
Vagabonds scored twice with substitute Ian Williams scoring an unconverted try and skipper Alf Cannon crossing with Rubert Leaton converting. However, only centres Guy Murray and Paul Doughty looked to match West Park. Next week's league opponents Chester, having signed almost half a team in the close season including five players from the Welsh league, will provide much stiffer opposition, the kick-off is 3pm.
Other results: Broughton Park 2nd 26 West Park 2nd 23, Eagle 2nd 15 West Park 3rd 22, West Park 4th 21 Widnes 4th 5.
Sunday junior scores: West Park under 17s at home to Ormskirk won 17-5; under 15s at home to Leigh won 51-5; and under 13s at home to Leigh lost 20-24.
WEST Park have been drawn at home to Warrington in the second round of the NPI Cup to be played on Saturday, October 4.
