BRIAN WROE knows the loneliness of the long distance runner.

But in his new job as chief inspector at Leigh police HQ, he's looking to surround himself with a successful community partnership team.

"My job is about working with the local community and improving the quality life for everyone - residents, people who work in the town, shoppers or those who are just passing through," he told The Journal.

Ch Insp Wroe, is on his second spell at Leigh. From 1979-88 he was an area and plain clothes sergeant. Promotion to inspector took him to Salford. He was on the tactical aid unit and later, as chief inspector, was posted to Sedgley Park in charge of training.

Married with two daughters and living in Bolton, he said: "I have an empathy with the people of Leigh, living as I do just across the border. I am well aware of the issues that affect local people and I believe I can really make an impact in doing something about them."

Brian's sporting interests take in running ("I've done a couple of marathons") and supporting Bolton Wanderers, where he's a season ticket holder.
