IN reply to a recent letter regarding the City's traffic problem, the cause has always seemed patently obvious, and the solution even more so... too many traffic lights which the council seem obsessed with erecting at every available junction, which results in halting rather than maintaining traffic flow.

Travelling north from Hala Road (A6) on a circular route of the city and back to the infirmary, there are 13 sets of lights to contend with and Penny St bridge seems to be the main place for the snarl up. If a filter system were introduced here, and half the following lights eradicated congestion would be eased dramatically. On other routes too, the East Rd-St Peters' set seems unnecessary.

At Bulk Road to the Greyhound Bridge section, an average 5 vehicles are allowed through on a sequence. This is a contributory factor of road rage and bad driving, so I would advise city mandarins to don their thinking caps sharpish and do anything to alleviate the ghastly mess.
