REGARDING a public memorial to Princess Diana. Some suggestions, like renaming a building or street seem like empty gestures.
Diana was generous and fun loving, she knew how to enjoy life and also help the poor. Often misunderstood and under-rated, her worth was not fully recognised until after her death. She stands in most people's minds as being sincere, anti-establishment and sympathetic. Earl Spencer's obituary to her was echoed by the nation and the people strewed her way with flowers without any official encouragement.
I would like to see a statue of Diana Princess of Wales sited in or near Market Square in the pedestrian zone as she loved to be among ordinary people. I am prepared to see a public subscription fund for that purpose. Lancaster has very little public art, and a graceful statue will be an asset to the town. Let Diana be seen here in all her glory and let her soul sing freely, for she is a model for a generation which was once told "there is no such thing as society."
