I AM sorry that my remarks (Letters, October 10) gave offence to Mr E Turner (Letters, October 14) and assure him none was intended.

I assumed that the fence was obstructing the footpath from Buncer Lane, Blackburn, and merely sought to point out that the obstruction, whatever it consisted of, caused the illegal closure of the footpath.

I was somewhat surprised that the planning officer said that permission was needed to replace a fence of the same type that had existed for 40 years or so, but I have no doubt that the appropriate authority will grant retrospective planning permission.

At least, if Mr Turner has the Ramblers' Association to advise him, he will receive excellent advice and assistance. I wish him every success with his battle.

G SMITH, Bold Street, Blackburn.
