A FORMER professional footballer and amateur boxer from Darwen has died, aged 77.
Walter Marvin, originally from Derby, played amateur football for Newport County before signing as a professional with Accrington Stanley in 1946.
The centre-forward had a reputation for not being easily shaken off the ball and scored in two of his first three matches for the Accrington team.
He was also a keen amateur middleweight boxer.
His brief professional footballing career ended in 1949 when he served in the Korean war.
He later settled in Darwen with his wife, local girl, Ellen Blackledge, and worked at Thwaites in Blackburn and Crown paints in Darwen.
He moved to Sale in Cheshire with his wife 10 years ago.
He is survived by wife, daughters Anne and Ellen, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He will be buried tomorrow at St Anne's Church, Sale, following a funeral service at 11.30am.
