PRESTON College is appealing for volunteers to help the town's ethnic minorities speak out.

The college on St Vincent's Road runs training courses for volunteers to teach English in the homes of the Asian community, mainly helping women who are housebound due to family commitments.

But this year's course will have to be scrapped if not enough volunteers enrol.

Elaine Jones, who co-ordinates the home tuition scheme, said: "A lot of Asian mothers benefit from tutoring for basics such as shopping or taking the children to the doctors. They are even encouraged to take further college courses."

Volunteer Carol Golden has become more of a friend to her students and families. She said: "It's very interesting to witness other cultures and very satisfying seeing the student communicating and gaining more confidence."
