NORTH End took a large following by road and tail the short journey to Burnden Park for the derby match against high-flying Bolton Wanderers.

Preston's captain, Tom Smith, had to miss the game through a bad groin strain, his place and the captaincy going to Tremelling, the former captain.

North End, playing in blue shirts, scored after just six minutes.

O'Donnell was brought down while manoeuvring for position just outside the box. Bobbie Beattie got his head to the free-kick and forced a corner.

From the kick, O'Donnell towered above everyone and nodded the ball through with a powerful flick of his head.

Bolton fought back and equalised after 20 minutes through Westwood who latched onto a ball which Tremelling failed to control, the ball rebounding off his shin.

Harry Hubbick, the Bolton full-back who was to become North End's trainer 30-odd years later, received an injury which meant that he had to retire from the game ten minutes before half-time.

Unfortunately for the Wanderers, left-half Taylor pulled a muscle just prior to the break and was only a passenger after the resumption.

North End should have taken the lead with the second half just two minutes old but Mutch missed his first penalty kick in PNE colours.

Although obviously weakened, Bolton were not lacking in spirit even though Preston were now causing plenty of problems for their hard pressed defence.

The Wanderers eventually capitulated after 77 minutes.

Milne found Maxwell unmarked with a fine through-pass and in one swift move of his left foot he had beaten Swift in the Bolton goal.

Within three minutes North End had the game virtually won as Bolton suffered a further setback.

Mutch received the ball from a throw-in and drove it towards a pack of players who all failed to clear the ball, each leaving it to another and the ball just rolled into an empty net.

The handicap of being down to what was really 9 players proved too much against a team of Preston's obvious calibre.

Not satisfied with a 3-1 scoreline North End scored a fourth goal just before the finish when a brilliant move between Shankly and Mutch ended in O'Donnell scoring his second goal of the game after side-stepping his marker in front of two Scottish team selectors.
