PRESTON manager Gary Peters took time out from training to receive a well deserved certificate of merit from a team of charitable young footballers.

The North End boss received his award from The Ribbleton Red Robins for supporting the side since they were set up two years ago.

He was joined by other staff from the club who also scooped awards and Citizen photographer Robert Underdown accepted one for work the paper has done to promote the youngsters.

Robins Chairman Geoff Clarkson said: "We're extremely indebted to North End and the Citizen for their magnificent support for these children's efforts."

Among the Preston staff who won certificates were physio Mick Rathbone and star striker David Reeves who organised a 'Day in the life of a Physio'.

North End's Football in the Community boss Ian Johnstone, Finance Director Tony Scholes and Chief Executive Peter Church were also winners. And Operations Manager Nigel Webster was a special case. He won an award after allowing Geoff to become a steward.

Geoff said: "I'm honoured and grateful to be part of the superb, professional and hardworking staff which provides desperately-needed finance to the kids.

"By agreeing to give my earnings to the children's charity, PNE are playing a vital role in the children's success."

Mr Church said: "We were very honoured to receive awards. The Red Robins have done a lot of good work."

Preston Citizen Editor Naomi Bunting added: "We're only too happy to promote the hardworking efforts of the boys. They deserve the praise. We are honoured to receive their certificate."
