YOUNG swimmers from Tyldesley SC enjoyed a series of PBs in the Holywell Shrimp Gala.

Among the best shows was that from Jade Whalley, 8, who took bronze at 25 backstroke, was fifth in the 25 butterfly and breaststroke and was reserve finalist in the 25 freestyle - all PBs.

Bronze also went to 10-year-olds Samantha Thompson (50 backstroke, PB) and Sarah Wood (25 butterfly, PB) and 11-year-old Matthew Concannon (50 breaststroke, PB).

Sarah was also fourth in both the 50 breaststroke and backstroke and was first reserve in the 50 freestyle - all PBs.

Samantha hit PBs in the 25 butterfly and 50 freestyle, finishing sixth in both events.

Matthew was also sixth in the 50 freestyle and first reserve in the 50 butterfly.

Other finalists were Michelle Greensmith (5th in the 10-Year 50 freestyle, PB; first reserve in the 50 backstroke), Laura Murphy (sixth in the 9-Year 25 breaststroke, PB) and Liam Whalley (sixth in the 10-Year 50 butterfly, PB).

David Gendall was second reserve in the 50 breaststroke and butterfly events.

Completing the Tyldesley line-up were Mark Hurst, Chris Mann, Thomas Hand, Mark Chilton and Kimberley Banner, all improving their previous bests.

Tyldesley swimmers were in short supply for the third Warburton Gala which coincided with the club's annual holiday.

Only four took part, each hitting the finals. Medals went to Stuart Carlisle (silver in the 13-Year 200 IM) and Sarah Wood (bronze in the 10-Year 50 butterfly).

Dominic Derbyshire and Christopher Tickle received pennants, Dominic finishing fourth in the 14-Year 50 breaststroke and Christopher sixth in the 12-Year 100 backstroke.

Gala Four saw Sarah Wood, 10, hitting gold in the 50 freestyle.

Andrew Hurst hit a PB in the 14-Year 200 IM (silver), a medal matched by Stuart Carlisle in the 13-Year 100 backstroke.

In the 12-Year 100 breaststroke Stephanie Thompson was equal second in a thrilling race.

Eleven-year-old Matthew Concannon (50 breaststroke) and Liam Whalley (100 butterfly) hit bronzes while third place also went to Stuart Carlisle (13-Year 50 butterfly).

The judges' decision gave Samantha Thompson third spot and Michelle Greensmith fourth with three swimmers finishing on the same time at 3rd, 4th and 5th places in the 10-Year 50 freestyle.

Mark Hurst, 11, narrowly missed out on a final place; he was first reserve in the 100 butterfly.

Tyldesley featured in a knockout fixture at home to Urmston, winning in dramatic style.

In the Junior Swim League, however, they were not as successful, losing against Ashton Central, Howe Bridge and Urmston.

In the Intermediate Swim League Tyldesley won well at Harpurhey.
