PROMPT action from an alert Metrolink tram driver saved a Bury school from serious damage after a petrol bomb attack.

The tram was travelling behind Derby High in Radcliffe Road when the driver spotted flames. He used his radio to notify the Metrolink control room and a message was quickly relayed to the fire service.

The arsonists attacked the school at about 8.30pm last Friday, October 10, throwing a petrol bomb - made from a milk bottle with a piece of cloth as a taper - through a window.

It started a fire in files on top of cabinets in an office. A recycling bin was also damaged and a corridor smokelogged.

Head Teacher Mr Gerald Wilson said the damage could have been much worse.

He added: "We expect repairs to cost less then £5,000. The school is operating as normal and there are no classrooms out of use."
