CALLS for a public inquiry have been dismissed by Wigan Council leader Peter Smith - because they don't have the power to order one.
Hope Carr Green Party candidate Chris Maile led calls for the inquiry, telling the meeting of plans to ask for a judicial review into the matter.
"Why are Wigan Council frightened of a public inquiry?" he asked Cllr Smith.
Cllr Smith said there was no legal basis for a public inquiry, explaining that the planning application had to first be considered.
"There is no reason why this planning application should have any different treatment.
"And the idea that we are trying to hide this project couldn't be further from the truth."
Moorfield Estates director Alex McLachan explained that only the Secretary of State could call for a public inquiry and a judicial review was no part of the planning process.
He advised objectors to lobby the Government for an inquiry.
