MORE than 1,000 shoppers at the Hardshaw Centre in St Helens stopped off to have their blood pressure checked during a three-day event to mark Stroke Awareness Week.
The checks, and general lifestyle advice on reducing the risk of strokes, were provided by staff from the St Helens & Knowsley Community Health (NHS) Trust and St Helens Hospital Kurtz Ward stroke Unit.
"High blood pressure is a major risk factor for a stroke, and we were encouraging people to have blood pressure checks when they visit their GP or practice nurse," said Debra Russell, Senior Health Promotion Advisor with the Trust.
