Thatto Heath 42
Leigh Miners Rangers 10
HEATH bounced back from the club's record league defeat at the hands of Waterhead with this win over Leigh Miners Rangers second string in the second round of the Lancashire County Challenge Cup.
After five minutes stand-off, Darren Harris sent left wingman Mike Woods in at the corner to put Heath in the lead. And 15 minutes later Woods again touched down, this time close to the posts, after fine play by second row Martin Horton, Harris and full-back Peter Derbyshire who also landed the conversion.
Derbyshire was next to touch down when he spun out of three would-be tackles to score beneath the posts and added the conversion.
Substitute wingman John Pumford rounded off Heath's first half scoring finishing a fine crossfield movement involving prop Dave Mitchell and centre Martin Ford.
Ten minutes into the second half Leigh got onto the scoreboard when Grant Parker forced his way over and centre Mick Evans added the goal.
Heath hit back five minutes later when Ashall took play blind from a play-the-ball and passed to the supporting Ford who dummied to score out wide.
On 60 minutes Southward managed to release the ball despite the attention of three defenders to give Ashall a clear run to score Heath's sixth try.
Half-backs Ashall and Harris were now taking full control of this game and they combined to create an easy run-in for Ford's second try making the score 32-6.
Minutes later, another fine break by Horton resulted in Pumford scoring a fine try in the corner.
In the 75th minute Ashall finished Heath's try scoring after selling an outrageous dummy. Derbyshire slotted over the conversion.
In the dying minute Miners' stand-off Steve Collier forced his way over from acting half.
Heath's man of the match awards, sponsored by Carborundum, went to Horton, Harris and Ashall respectively.
