MYSTERY surrounds a fire which destroyed the Bargain Booze store at Lugsmore Lane, Thatto Heath.

Police and the fire brigade are investigating the suspicious fire, which broke out on Thursday night at about 5pm, destroying the store.

The off-licence was undergoing refurbishment and was due to start trading in mid-November following a High Court battle.

Local traders had objected to the licence being granted, but their objections were overruled and the licence to sell alcohol was granted on October 1.

Proprietor Paul Bond (36) though is determined to carry on trading despite the latest setback and is offering a substantial reward to anyone who may be able to give any information leading to the conviction of those responsible for the fire.

He said: "When things like this happen it only makes me more determined to open the store and give the local people value for money."

Anyone who may have any information regarding this incident can call DC Aidan Lavin at St Helens police station on 0151 777 6066, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
