STUDENTS from a Rossendale high school are leaving their books and studies behind for an action-packed trip to Missouri.
The 18 sixth formers and four teachers from Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School will be guests of Mrs Barbara Brooks, whose late husband John was a former pupil.
Dr Brooks was born in Ramsbottom and, after completing his education at BRGS, he went to study medicine at the University of Manchester and did one year's research in the States. That turned into a lifetime's work when he entered general practice in Springfield, Missouri.
He died nearly two years ago, but in the two previous years had rekindled his relationship with the school and endowed a prize to sixth formers who were hoping to study medicine at university.
He also received books, photographs and magazines about the school and what was happening.
Mrs Brooks visited the school this year to present her husband's prize at the annual presentation evening and has spent the last 18 months organising accommodation and activities for the party of students and teachers.
While in the States they will spend some time visiting local schools, the university and on work experience.
They will also visit Silver Dollar City, a homecoming football game and the Spooktacular at the local zoo on Hallowe'en.
