ANTI-BOOZE bobbies are warning local off-licences, pubs and stores they will track down the sources of alcohol being drunk by under-age street-boozers.
The warning follows a successful 'Operation Messina' in Atherton and Hindley Green aimed at cutting out vandalism and public order offences by groups of young people.
And the crackdown is set to continue with the help of concerned residents.
Supt Malcolm Howells, head of Leigh police, said his officers had used their new powers under the Confiscation of Alcohol Act in Wigan Road, Atherton, and Atherton Road, Hindley Green. The alcohol was poured down the drain.
"Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated in the area and the police will be working with the community to reinforce that message," said Mr Howells.
And his message to ther drinkers was: "If you are too young to buy alcohol, you're too young to drink it!"
Seven youngsters aged 16 and 17 - including two 16-year-old girls - had drinks confiscated. They ranged from cans of lager to bottles of strong cider.
Ch Insp Brian Wroe said the youngsters' parents would be informed.
He further warned licensees in shops and pubs about the illegality of selling alcohol to under 18s.
"We would also advise them not to sell to adults if they are going to immediately pass it on to children.
"We will continue our enquiries to find the sources of the drinks we confiscated at the weekend."
