NEEDY families are being given the chance to freeze their electricity bills thanks to a new energy efficiency campaign. Blackburn with Darwen Council are giving low income families the chance to buy energy-saving fridges for just £25 which would save at least £30 a year in reduced bills.
The Fridgesaver project is a nationwide project with electricity companies collaborating to provide up to 50,000 fridges across the country. It means that more than 100 could be available to local families.
Councillor Maureen Bateson, chairman of the council's Rights, Advice and Entitlements sub committee, said: "The scheme, which is part of our anti-poverty initiative, will help to ensure that old and inefficient fridges are taken out of circulation."
Anyone who thinks they may qualify for the scheme can obtain more information and application forms from the Advice Centre on Ainsworth Street, Blackburn or from Customer Services in Blackburn Town Hall.
The council has pledged its full backing for an international action day against poverty and is to press the Government to draw up an action plan.
