AN annual prize has been established to reward Burnley schoolgirls' voluntary work for old folk.

The Peter Mason Award is named in memory of the former chairman of the North East Lancashire Care Homes Association.

After Mr Mason, of Brookside Home for the Elderly, died, the association decided to make a donation to a cause he would have supported.

After consulting his widow, they chose St Hilda's RC High School - pupils make regular visits to the elderly and housebound and the school has links with Brookside.

A £200 donation will fund the award scheme, and the first prizes went to two of the girls who have taken part in the visiting scheme, Emma Gill (left), 14, and Jodi Whittaker, 15.

"The girls have been very dedicated and loyal," said St Hilda's teacher John Livesey.

Anne Porter, secretary of the care homes association, presented tokens to Emma and Jodi.
