IT CAME as quite a surprise to discover the complete absence of any listing in the Yellow Pages for rail enquiries.
The fact came to light when my train excursions company, Green Express Railtours, began receiving a considerable number of queries intended for both the National Rail Enquiries Service line and the local Rail Travel Centre. Apparently this is happening all over the country.
As a small business, I would be very worried if I were losing so many potential customers, and the revenue they would bring.
How many people are turning to other means of transport because they can't get the information they need about trains?
I find this especially worrying as the Rail Regulator has severely reprimanded the National Train Enquiry System for its poor response rate to telephone enquiries.
It would appear that, in the bid to centralise information and prevent local stations being tied up, the very medium people rely on to get phone numbers for business and services has been overlooked.
By the way, the National Enquiries System number is 0345 48 49 50.
