PAUL Smith could be poised for a shock return to Division Two action against Walsall at Turf Moor on Saturday.

Smith impressed watching player-manager Chris Waddle in last night's reserve team triumph.

The winger played a full 90 minutes and paved the way to victory for the Clarets with their first goal in a 3-1 win over Stockport County at Turf Moor.

And that means he looks almost certain to be back in the frame for this weekend's important League action.

Player-manager Chris Waddle said: "Having Paul Smith back in the picture is like having a new signing on the books.

"Paul has played three games in the past week, a friendly, a Lancashire League game and now a reserve team fixture.

"He certainly impressed me last night. He appeared sharp and alert.

"Providing he has no reaction, that will put him in contention for Walsall.

"Paul has certainly looked the part in training and has definitely got a chance for Saturday."

Meanwhile, defender Lee Howey will pick up the captain's armband following David Eyres' departure to Preston North End.

Eyres linked up with his new team-mates for the first time at Deepdale this morning. He will make his North End debut against Plymouth Argyle at Deepdale on Saturday.

But the transfer leaves player-manager Chris Waddle searching for a new captain for the remainder of Burnley's Second Division campaign.

Waddle said: "I'm looking for an experienced player and Lee Howey fits that bill.

"There are a number of people to consider, like Steve Blatherwick, but Lee probably has the most experience for this role.

"I want a player who is committed, totally focused and determined to lead from the front.

"Lee Howey is my number one choice."

Triallist Kevin Henderson has returned to the North-East following a three-day trial at Turf Moor.

Henderson caught the eye in last night's second team fixture, but was substituted in the second half following a heavy tackle by Nelson De Costa.

JOHN Ward's Bristol City moved into third place in Division Two after a 2-0 win at Millwall last night.
