A CHARITY football team desperately needs a permanent pitch to help kick drugs into touch.

Daniel FC was set up by the friends of 17-year-old Daniel Ashton who died after taking ecstasy in a Blackpool nightclub two years ago.

The team of talented footballers, many of whom went to Warbreck High School with Danny, aim to push the anti-drugs message to youngsters at their most vulnerable age.

Backed by the charity DANIEL (Drugs And Narcotics Impact on Everyone's Lives) set up by Danny's mother Heather, the team has been playing friendly matches with local clubs.

But in order to play more, and fulfil hopes of playing in a Sunday league next year, it needs a permanent base, and is appealing for anyone with facilities to contact manager Kenny Mew on 304322, or Heather Ashton on 291742.

Mrs Ashton, of Milbourne Street, Blackpool, said: "Danny had many friends who were good footballers, some of whom went on to play professionally and this is their way of making something positive out of Danny's death."

Meanwhile the charity, which runs a helpline for drug-users and their families on (0345) 023867, is also seeking economical premises to set up a social centre.

The aim is to provide entertainment to keep youngsters off the streets, and also to provide advice for those in need.
