A COUNCILLOR came under fire from residents during a public meeting about road safety proposals in Colne.

Councillor Tony Greaves was questioned about remarks he made during a previous meeting concerning a road safety scheme in the Horsfield area.

Residents alleged that while pointing out that the accident rate in the area was not high enough to qualify for money from Lancashire County Council, Coun Greaves suggested that if more children were knocked down the county might look again at helping local people.

Coun Greaves admitted he made the remarks flippantly but when pressed he added: "If people have come to shout at me or make political attacks then I have to say I'm going to stop you."

A series of proposals to make "rat run" streets in Colne safer will be put forward to councillors next week.

Around 20 people gathered at the Peter Birtwistle Community Centre, Colne, to discuss road safety issues. These included road humps on Oak Street, roundabouts on Windsor Street at its junctions with Skipton Road and Langroyd Road and the blocking of Temple Street to stop traffic going along its full length.

Counc Greaves, who chaired the meeting, said work was expected to start shortly on a zebra crossing in Byron Road and a traffic island at the junction of Skipton Road and Castle Road

The proposals will go to Pendle Council's Colne area committee on Thursday.

Other ideas put forward by residents will be investigated further by council officers.
