LEIGH'S controversial snow dome project will not harm local wildlife, according to an independent ecologist.
Following claims that the Xanadu project would harm the area's wildlife, developers Greenbank Partnerships commissioned a study of its ecological impact.
And a report by ecologist, Dr R. Gemmell, has said the proposal would cause no material harm to nature conservation interests and is in full accord with government and EC guidance.
The report adds: "It would be difficult to find a more suitable site for the development on nature conservation criteria.
"The proposed development is on a site where wildlife impacts are minimal."
And the report stated that building Xanadu could enhance the scope for new habitat creation.
Dr Gemmell is an independent ecology consultant who has worked for Lancashire County Council, the former Greater Manchester Council, and the Greater Manchester Countryside Unit.
His report is based on both an examination of the environment statement submitted as part of the planning application, and personal examination of the site.
Dr Gemmell found:
The development will have no effect on any site of substantial ecological importance and there is no evidence of any badgers, other protected species or major wildlife importance on the site.
Bird movements to and from Pennington Flash will not be affected.
Wildlife using Westleigh Brook could be protected by re-aligning part of the brook.
The extension to the Pennington Flash site of biological importance is outside the application site and will not be affected.
There are opportunities to create important new wildlife habitats at the southern part of the site, where a lake is to be created.
The siting of the development accords with recent Government guidance on nature conservation.
Chris Baybutt, from Greenbank Partnerships, said:
"Since there has been a lot of claims that Xanadu will destroy the ecology of the site and Pennington Flash, we felt that we would take independent advice from someone who knows the area well.
"Far from harming any wildlife interests, Dr Gemmell's report suggests that building Xanadu offers very positive opportunities for enhancing the ecology of the area, and we look forward to playing a full part in this."
