GET ready for the latest music revival as the ageing accordion makes its comeback - in Leyland, near Preston.
Lecturer David Batty, who has been a player for 20 years, has started a new club to bring the old-fashioned instrument back into the limelight. The first night features a hi-tech digital accordion which works like an electronic keyboard, making the sounds of other musical instruments.
David said: "The accordion was more popular than the piano in the 40s and 50s. Players today don't realise there are many other accordion fans nearby. I'm expecting at least 30 people on the first night."
The meetings will feature slots for local players to perform, workshops and appearances by successful accordionists. The first guest will be Steve Roxton, a former Preston man who has travelled the world with his art, spending three years in Bermuda and playing in Australia, America and Europe. Steve is now based in Jersey and is David's hero. He also happens to be David's dad!
David is also appealing for donations of unwanted and broken accordions to be used by the club for spares and repairs.
The first get-together takes place on November 14 at 8pm at the Highfield pub on Southport Road near Leyland. For details contact David (01772) 454328.
