THE nightmare goes on for the supporters of Preston North End after this Roses match left the three points on the wrong side of the Pennines.

And yet, it could and should, have been all over and beyond recovery by half time un Tuesday night (Nov 4) as Preston squandered chance after chance and in the end paid dearly for their errors.

Jon Macken shot high and wide from six yards and then Mark Rankine was presented with an excellent chance but he wanted too much time and the chance was gone.

Gary Parkinson watched in anguish as his perfectly struck free kick from 25 yards was brilliantly saved by Mark Samways and Lee Ashcroft shot into the side netting.

Samways again came to York's rescue a corner kick from David Eyres was only cleared to the edge of the box and Sean Gregan hit a powerhouse shot which the keeper performed wonders to keep out.

York looked impressive on the break with Rowe and Bull leading the line well and in Pouton and Stephenson on the wings they had players who ran at defenders and there was always the fear that despite the chances being created by North End, York would get a goal.

And so it proved to be as Preston failed to clear what looked to be a harmless situation just after the hour the ball fell to Mark Tinkler twenty yards out and his well struck shot was in the net while Moilanen was still diving trying to keep it out.

Preston battled back, again Gregan hit a stunning shot which Hall cleared off he line and Read also kicked off the line in a goalmouth scramble. Preston never gave up, but they were now chasing a match which was there for the taking. It was North End's third successive defeat by a 1-0 margin and they have now lost five of the last six matches.
