FOLLOWING a brilliant display at Everton, a good attendance was expected at Deepdale for the arrivals of reigning league champions Manchester City.
The gate was swelled by a large following from the Manchester area, many of whom came on the twenty football special trains which had been laid on.
After a slow start North End's five forwards clicked into gear and combined well to give George Mutch the chance to put North End ahead on 27 minutes.
He took his chance well slotting the ball beyond the advancing Frank Swift.
PNE doubled their lead just seven minutes later when Dougal put Mutch away.
His precise centre was perfect for Bobbie Beattie to direct a well-placed header past the helpless Swift.
Just prior to the half-time break the visitors broke away and against the run of play, Brook, the left-winger, got onto the end of Toseland's cross and pulled a goal back, via the upright.
Brook had only just moved in from the wing to the centre forward spot as Tilson had swopped placed due to a pulled muscle.
In fact he did not turn out for the second half, so the ten-men City team rolled their sleeves up and got stuck in.
North End with the spare man did not capitalise on City's misfortune and allowed the visitors back into the game which happens many a time when you are up against ten men.
Although Maxwell, Mutch and Dougal on a couple of occasions had chances to kill the game off it was the visitors who recorded the next goal.
Toseland started a move in the 68th minute which Doherty gleefully finished off with a powerful shot.
Their recovery against the odds was astonishing.
In fact they could have snatched both points in the end but for Burns in the North End goal as he pulled off two splendid saves late in the game to salvage a point.
It's all about team spirit.
