PLANS for residents-only car parking in Leigh town centre have been shelved - because there isn't enough parking space!

Greater Manchester Transportation Unit carried out a survey for the council into conflicting demand for free on-street parking in the Railway Road area between residents and businesses.

The general pattern for parking in the town centre is for short/medium stay visits but off-street pay and display car parks have little spare peak capacity. "It is clear from results that there is insufficient additional space to accommodate the vehicles displaced from the area, if such a scheme were to be introduced," says a report to today's Highways Committee.

A residents-only parking scheme is to be introduced in part of Wigan and will be monitored before a new report is prepared on the Railway Road area next year.
