Moseley 79 Liverpool St Helens 10 ALTHOUGH in the end LSH were thrashed, they never threw in the towel against a bigger, fitter and faster side of full-time professionals.
The Moseley players wage bill is reported to be in excess of half a million pounds per year and the club, in addition to the £250,000 payment by Sky to clubs in their division, as Birmingham's senior club, have attracted a dozen or so major sponsors who contribute substantially to the club coffers.
How LSH would like to be in that position!
The visitors, however, contributed fully to an entertaining first half and held the lead through a Jim Salisbury penalty for a time.
Moseley, with a lot of possession, failed to break a determined defence for half an hour, but then ran in three tries to take a half time lead of 20-3.
The second half started with the Midlanders dominating all phases, but only in the last quarter did the flood gates open.
Several Moseley scores were the result of sheer physical pressure as the LSH defence tired and the tackles became weaker.
Prop Tommy Jackson, however, made a couple of good runs, one of which resulted in a try for flanker Tim Wood converted by Salisbury.
The gap between the haves and have nots is widening by the day, but full marks to the LSH men who took part, for their refusal to surrender.
